Description: 10,000 women and 2,400 girls are potentially affected by female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) in Chicago. Women and girls impacted by FGM/C face immediate and long-term threats to their health through infections, hemorrhage, HIV, infertility, and life-long psychological trauma.
Unlike other forms of child sexual abuse, genital mutilation is a one-off event. FGM/C is not performed with the intent to harm but to ensure girls conform to specific cultural expectations. The practice is cultural rather than religious, as no mainstream faith condones FGM/C.
Our presentation will focus on preventing FGM/C through early intervention and ensuring that women and girls subjected to these abuses receive appropriate, culturally-sensitive responses.
