Description: Social work program curricula prepare students to practice social work by teaching core concepts and competencies to the best of their abilities. However, nothing can prepare a person for some of the most valuable lessons that will be learned in the field. The correctional setting is not a common focus when society thinks about the social work profession. While it is not a well-known area of social work, this environment offers valuable learning opportunities. These lessons cover important topics including teamwork, networking, rapport building, boundary setting, self-care, perspective, and gratitude. The source of this information is not common, however that does not diminish the validity. Residents, formerly known as inmates, are individuals who either engaged in a risky behavior and/or made a poor choice. If they choose to, they can learn from these mistakes. We, as social workers, can also learn from the residents.
