Mental Illness and Racism: A Look at How Systemic Racism Affects People of Color with Mental Illness
Date: Tuesday, May, 18 2021 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM (Central Standard Time)
Presenters: Valerie Wise, LCSW, LCAC, CADC
CEUs: 1.0 Cultural Competency
Description: This course will bring awareness to the factors surrounding how and why people of color with mental illness end up in county and state prisons more than their white counterparts. It will point to the factors of race, poverty, and class using a case study to highlight how mental illness intersects with law enforcement, often with tragic results when the person is either Black or Brown. The course will explore solutions to this problem and the role that social workers can play in bringing about positive change to this issue.
